Nagaland Gaonbura Federation demands end to government restrictions

The Nagaland Gaonbura Federation (NGBF) has called on the state government to withdraw restrictions regarding the appointment and functioning of Gaonburas (GBs) in both urban and rural areas. During an executive meeting in Dimapur on October 30, the federation expressed disappointment over government directives that they claim undermine the traditional institution.

The NGBF stated that the institution of Gaonburas is essential to Naga customary practices and traditional village administration. They also raised concerns that certain provisions within the government-enforced Code of Ethics for GBs may infringe upon the fundamental rights and constitutional freedoms of citizens.

Additionally, the federation expressed concern regarding the proliferation of Naga political factions. With more than 30 existing groups, the NGBF noted that the formation of new factions is unwelcome as the public awaits a peaceful political solution. The group also highlighted the economic hardship caused to the public by multiple taxations imposed by various factions.
