Nagaland Governor Yadav reviews agriculture schemes, urges sustainable farming

On July 28, Nagaland Governor Nand Kishore Yadav chaired a review meeting of the state Department of Agriculture at Lok Bhavan in Kohima. He highlighted the need to make agriculture more productive, resilient and market‑oriented while stressing sustainable farming practices and the effective rollout of government schemes.

Officials briefed the governor on key centrally‑sponsored programmes such as the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), National Food Security and Nutrition Mission (NFSNM), Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North‑Eastern Region (MOVCD‑NER), Sub‑Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), Per Drop More Crop (PDMC) and others. They noted that about 70% of Nagaland’s population depends on agriculture, with women comprising roughly 65% of the agricultural workforce, and discussed progress in oil‑palm expansion, organic and natural farming, water‑harvesting, farmer training and market linkages.

The meeting also identified implementation challenges, including fragmented landholdings, inadequate infrastructure, difficult terrain and poor road connectivity, and outlined measures to address these obstacles.
