Nagaland groups demand justice for alleged taxi driver assault

Women’s organizations and civil society groups held a rally at Chiephobozou to demand justice following allegations that a woman was abducted and sexually assaulted by a taxi driver on October 17. The incident reportedly occurred while the victim was traveling from Kohima; the driver allegedly bypassed her destination and drove toward the Chiechama–Botsa route where the assault took place.

The Nerhema Women Organisation (NWO) led the protest, calling for a speedy, impartial investigation and stronger safeguards for women using public transport. A memorandum was submitted to the Headquarters Additional Deputy Commissioner seeking formal action.

The All Nagaland Taxi Association (ANTA) also held a press conference calling for a thorough probe. While expressing solidarity with the survivor, ANTA clarified that unauthorized private vehicles operating as taxis are not affiliated with the association and noted that such unregulated operations risk damaging the reputation of registered operators. ANTA has called for better coordination between the association, traffic police, and district administration to improve passenger security.
