Nagaland to restructure government schools and recruit STEM teachers

The Nagaland government has announced a major restructuring of its state school system to improve enrollment, infrastructure, and educational quality. According to School Education Advisor Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, the reforms will include the amalgamation or closure of low-enrollment institutions and the creation of composite schools to provide students with continuity from elementary to higher secondary education.

To address critical shortages in technical subjects, the government plans to undertake emergency recruitment of graduate teachers specializing in mathematics, physics, and chemistry. The department also intends to rationalize teacher deployment by redeploying surplus staff to areas with acute shortages.

Governance reforms will target human resource management, transfer mechanisms, and administrative functions. Additionally, the state aims to modernize the curriculum to compete with private institutions, incorporating project-based learning and digital skills such as animation and AI. The government also plans to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with Google on August 28 to enhance the digital education ecosystem and STEM preparedness.
