Nagaland University hosts 19th All India Conference of Chinese Studies

The 19th All India Conference of Chinese Studies (AICCS) took place at Nagaland University, Lumami, from October 28 to 30. Jointly organized by the Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS), New Delhi, and the Nagaland University Department of Political Science, the event brought together scholars and practitioners to discuss contemporary China, India-China relations, and the future of China studies in India.

Keynote speaker Prof. Nimmi Kurian addressed the material costs of artificial intelligence, noting how global AI supply chains involve resource extraction, water consumption, and land use that impact regions like the Naga Hills. This discussion linked North-East India to broader global debates regarding technology, development, and environmental justice.

Other participants, including representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs and the ICS, emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic engagement and expanding academic research on East Asia within the North-East region. Panel discussions also addressed institutional and linguistic challenges, with scholars calling for improved research infrastructure and Mandarin training to foster independent academic discourse.
