Nagano shrines targeted in series of copper plate thefts
A series of copper plate thefts from shrine roofs has been reported across the Shimoina region in Nagano Prefecture, Japan. The most recent incident occurred at Nyutozan Shrine in Shimojo Village, where a copper roof covering measuring approximately 6 by 4 meters was stripped away. The theft was discovered by worshippers on September 12.
This marks the third such incident in the area, following similar thefts at Kamome Kamiguri Hachiman Shrine in Anan Town and Shinno-gu Shrine in Oshika Village. At Kamome Kamiguri Hachiman Shrine, the theft resulted in the cancellation of a scheduled autumn festival, and local officials expressed concern regarding the high costs of repairs for the aging community.
At Shinno-gu Shrine, officials noted that the theft occurred just as they were considering the installation of security cameras. Local shrine representatives have expressed deep distress and anger over the loss of these historical and cultural elements, and police are investigating the incidents as thefts.
