Nagasaki photograph inspired ‘Grave of the Fireflies’

A historical photograph taken in Nagasaki in 1945 by American military photographer Joe O’Donnell depicts a young boy standing stoically with his deceased younger brother tied to his back while waiting at a crematorium.

This poignant image served as a partial inspiration for the 1988 Studio Ghibli animated film ‘Grave of the Fireflies’, which is based on the semi-autobiographical novel by Akiyuki Nosaka. The story follows two siblings, Seita and Setsuko, struggling to survive in Japan during the final months of World War II after losing their mother in a bombing. Nosaka’s writing was deeply influenced by the real-life loss of his own younger sister to malnutrition during the war.
