Nagekeo earthquake recovery: ID services and damage assessment efforts underway

In the aftermath of an earthquake in Nagekeo, East Nusa Tenggara, local authorities are working to restore essential services and assess damages. The Nagekeo Civil Registry Office (Dukcapil) has launched a mobile service initiative to assist earthquake survivors in renewing lost or damaged identification documents.

Starting August 25, 2026, officials are visiting refugee camps to process electronic ID cards (e-KTP), birth certificates, and other vital documents that were destroyed by the quake or subsequent tsunami activity. To facilitate this, the government is utilizing digital identity technology (IKD plus) and providing internet connectivity to ensure efficient service delivery at various posts.

Simultaneously, local legislator Elias Cima has called for rigorous and transparent data collection regarding residential damage. He emphasized that officials must conduct thorough on-site assessments of heavy, moderate, and light damage rather than relying solely on photographs. Accurate data is deemed critical to ensure that aid reaches the correct recipients and supports the recovery of small home-based businesses disrupted by the disaster.
