Nagoya Asian Games: Wang Guan-hung wins swimming gold as table tennis upsets occur

The 2026 Nagoya Asian Games continue with significant achievements and upsets across multiple disciplines. In swimming, Wang Guan-hung secured a historic gold medal for Chinese Taipei in the men’s 200m butterfly with a time of 1:55.05, marking the first men’s swimming gold for the delegation since 1998.

In table tennis, Japanese star Tomokazu Harimoto suffered a major upset, losing 3-4 in the quarterfinals to Iran’s Noshad Alamian. Following this, Japan’s remaining male singles player, Tomokazu Matsushima, was also eliminated after losing 2-4 to China’s Lin Shidong, ending Japan’s hopes for a men’s singles title.

Chinese Taipei’s Lin Yun-ju has secured a bronze medal in the men’s singles table tennis after defeating Hong Kong’s Chan Tai-wa 4-1 in the quarterfinals. He will face China’s Lin Shidong in the semifinals.

Hong Kong’s delegation saw mixed results, with the men’s foil fencing team advancing to the semifinals to guarantee a medal, while the women’s heavy epee team was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Kazakhstan. In esports, Hong Kong secured a bronze medal in martial arts.

Other notable performances include Chinese Taipei’s success in skateboarding, with Lin Yi-fan and Ku Yung-yen both winning silver medals.
