The Nagoya City Transportation Bureau, in collaboration with Sumitomo Mitsui Card and several other partners, will launch a contactless credit card payment service across all Nagoya City Subway stations starting September 3, 2026.

This initiative aims to strengthen the city's public transport infrastructure ahead of the Asian Games in September 2026 and the Asian Para Games in October 2026. The service is designed to assist both local residents and international visitors who may be unfamiliar with Japan's traditional ticket systems or specific transit IC cards.

The service utilizes Sumitomo Mitsui Card’s ‘stera transit’ solution and supports seven major payment brands: Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, and UnionPay. Passengers can use contactless credit, debit, or prepaid cards, as well as mobile wallets.

With this rollout, the subway systems in Japan's three largest metropolitan areas—Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya—will all support contactless credit card boarding. Additionally, the service will allow for seamless transfers with 13 Meitetsu railway stations that have already implemented similar technology.
