Nagpur Floods Expose Flaws in Smart City Road and Drainage Projects

Heavy rain for about three hours on July 30, 2026 inundated Nagpur, Maharashtra, flooding homes, shops, schools and causing extensive damage to personal belongings and agricultural stores. Residents condemned the city’s "Smart City" label, pointing to multi‑crore development schemes that failed to prevent waterlogging. They blamed the elevation of newly built cement roads, which blocked existing drainage, and questioned the actions of zone engineers and municipal officials. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has spent roughly ₹1,040 crore on four phases of cement‑road construction, with a fifth phase of ₹900 crore announced in the budget, while drainage improvements remain inadequate. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, whose constituency includes several affected neighborhoods, faced criticism as citizens demanded accountability and a review of ongoing projects. The incident revived memories of the disastrous September 2023 flood that also highlighted drainage shortcomings.
