Nagpur traffic crisis worsens due to encroachments and outdated management

Nagpur is facing severe traffic management challenges as the city's vehicle population exceeds 2 million. On Godhani Road, specifically between Faras Chowk and Godhani, illegal encroachments by shopkeepers and small businesses have significantly narrowed the roadway, causing daily congestion and hindering movement for thousands of commuters.

In addition to physical encroachments, a lack of designated parking near hospitals, halls, and shops leads to vehicles being parked in ‘no parking’ zones, further obstructing traffic and increasing the risk of accidents. Local residents report that while anti-encroachment squads conduct occasional actions, the issue persists shortly after.

Critics argue that despite being a ‘Smart City,’ Nagpur’s traffic management relies on outdated methods such as basic red-green signals and manual fine collection rather than technological innovation. While the city has installed cameras under the Smart City project, there are concerns that these are used primarily for revenue generation through fines rather than improving traffic flow. The infrastructure, including metro pillars and flyovers, has also been noted to contribute to narrower road spaces in certain areas.
