Ghana economic outlook faces inflation and wage concerns
Ghana is facing economic uncertainty as analysts and labor leaders express concern over inflation and the sustainability of recent wage agreements. While Fitch Solutions forecasts GDP growth of nearly 6.0% for 2026, it predicts a slowdown to 4.7% in 2027 due to rising inflationary pressures that could weaken household purchasing power.
Following a government agreement for an 8% base pay increase for public sector workers in 2027, economist Dr. Theo Acheampong warned that the real value of the raise depends on price stability. He noted that Ghana’s public sector wage bill remains high, consuming between 25% and 36% of total government expenditure.
Jacob Anaba, President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), stated that organized labor may reopen negotiations if the cost of living, particularly for food and fuel, continues to rise. Anaba criticized the uniform percentage increase, arguing that workers earning as little as GH¢700 a month require much higher adjustments than those earning higher salaries to combat financial distress.
