NAGRC&DB to scale up livestock breeding for PDM farmers

The Ugandan government has pledged support to the National Animal Genetic Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC&DB) to expand the production of improved livestock breeds. This initiative aims to supply beneficiaries of the Parish Development Model (PDM) with high-quality dairy heifers, piglets, and poultry chicks to facilitate the transition from subsistence to commercial farming.

During a strategic retreat in Entebbe, the NAGRC&DB Board of Directors and management outlined priorities for the 2026/2027 financial year. These plans include scaling up the supply of improved genetics and implementing the National Animal Breeding Strategy and Action Plan. The strategy focuses on commercializing animal breeding, boosting livestock productivity, and conserving indigenous genetic resources across dairy, beef, goat, pig, poultry, and fish value chains.

NAGRC&DB Board Chairperson Ben Anyama stated that the agency will intensify mass breeding and multiplication programs for high-performing and climate-smart breeds to ensure accessibility for farmers at various levels.
