Okinawa: US Marine arrested for suspected murder of Japanese woman

A US Marine, 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Devin Jacob Ballard, has been arrested in Naha, Okinawa, on suspicion of the robbery and murder of 39-year-old Anna Yagi. Police report that the victim died of asphyxiation and her belongings were stolen. Ballard has denied the allegations.

The incident has triggered significant political tension and public outrage in Japan. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi described the event as a “heinous crime” and lodged a formal protest with the United States, calling for strict discipline among US military personnel. Local officials, including Okinawa Governor Genta Koja and Naha Mayor Satoru Chinen, have demanded a review of the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA).

In response, the III Marine Expeditionary Force announced a 48-hour suspension of military operations in Okinawa to conduct training on standards and discipline, followed by a 30-day reflection period. The US military has stated it is cooperating with Japanese authorities and is taking the allegations seriously.
