Naha, Okinawa begins construction on new cruise terminal

Construction has officially begun on a new cruise terminal in the port of Naha, Okinawa, aimed at supporting the growth of the cruise industry in Japan and East Asia. The project was initiated following a Cruise Hub Formation Agreement signed in August 2026 with the Naha Port Authority.

The terminal will be developed and operated by Cruise Port Naha G. K., a joint venture between CTL Maritime and RCL Cruises Ltd., representing the interests of MSC Cruises and the Royal Caribbean Group. The facility is designed to feature modern amenities to improve guest experiences, increase operational efficiency, and accommodate some of the world’s most advanced cruise ships.

Completion and the start of operations are scheduled for March 2028. Jason Liberty, Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Group, noted that Japan is a vital cruise market in Asia and emphasized that the project represents a long-term investment in local infrastructure that will benefit the community.
