NAHB Highlights Remodeling Sector Growth as Home Remodeling Month Begins

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) has launched National Home Remodeling Month for May, using the occasion to showcase continued expansion in the remodeling segment of residential construction. Data from the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages show that the number of remodeling firms has risen from fewer than 69,000 in 2000 to more than 128,000 in the first quarter of 2025, raising remodelers' share of residential building‑construction establishments to 56%.

Employment figures mirror the firm‑level growth: remodelers accounted for almost half (49%) of residential construction workers in 2024, up from roughly 30% during the mid‑2000s housing boom. NAHB’s Remodeling Market Index has stayed above the break‑even level of 50 for 24 consecutive quarters, indicating sustained positive sentiment among remodelers since early 2020. “Remodeling companies are less affected by the rise and fall of mortgage rates compared to home building companies, so the remodeling industry has continued to grow despite a series of Federal Reserve rate hikes that have driven up the cost of buying a new home and hindered new construction,” said NAHB Remodelers Chair Elliott Pike of Homewood, Alabama.
