Nahdlatul Ulama explores soft power and service values

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is positioning itself as a significant actor in a shifting global landscape characterized by multipolarity and the rise of the Global South. As traditional geopolitical structures face fragmentation, NU’s role as a massive socio-religious entity provides it with unique soft power and the ability to engage in second-track diplomacy that transcends ideological divides.

During the 35th NU Muktamar in Jombang, Gus Arwani Thomafi outlined the 'Madarij al-Khidmah', a framework of five core values for members serving the community and nation. These values include sincerity in service, adhering to the principles of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (moderation, balance, justice, and tolerance), following the guidance of religious scholars, maintaining brotherhood (ukhuwah), and strengthening nationalism.
