Nahdlatul Ulama strengthens ties with Egypt and Al-Azhar
Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is strengthening its strategic ties with Egypt and Al-Azhar University to enhance human resource development for its members. The organization's central leadership (PBNU) aims to expand cooperation with Al-Azhar, the Egyptian Ministry of Endowments, and Dar Ifta to support the thousands of NU cadres currently studying in Cairo.
In Cairo, the LD PCINU Egypt and the Fordaf Egypt Forum recently conducted an international preacher certification program based on the Al-Azhar methodology. Running from late September to early October 2026, the training targeted final-year students and recent graduates. The curriculum focused on contemporary Islamic law, fatwa methodology, social reality (fiqh al-wāqi‘), digital media utilization, and communication ethics to prepare preachers for modern societal challenges.
Egyptian Ambassador to Indonesia, Yasser Elshemy, noted the shared values of moderation and tolerance between the two nations. He also highlighted that Egypt currently provides 30 full scholarships annually to PBNU.
