Nahid Islam calls for structural state reforms in Bangladesh
Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the Opposition, has warned that without fundamental reforms to the state structure, any new leadership will eventually follow the path of Sheikh Hasina. Speaking at a meeting in Munshiganj, Islam argued that simply changing the leadership is insufficient if the underlying political machinery remains intact.
Islam criticized the previous Awami League administration for the politicization of key institutions, including the Election Commission, the judiciary, and the Human Rights Commission, noting that these partisan practices persist. He emphasized that the Constitution must be amended through a reform council to prevent the current government from becoming a mere continuation of previous regimes.
Regarding the potential return of Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh, Islam stated he sees no possibility of her returning in December. He further alleged that India is using the Awami League as a tool to exert political and geopolitical pressure on Bangladesh. Additionally, Islam announced a mass protest in Dhaka's Shahbagh on October 31 to demand the resignations of the Home Minister and the Energy Minister.
