Nahid Islam criticizes government over utility failures and human rights

Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the opposition, has accused the current government of failing to provide essential services such as oil, gas, and electricity while infringing upon fundamental human rights. Speaking at a human rights rally in front of the National Parliament House, Islam criticized the administration for suppressing dissent and failing to implement necessary reforms, including police and election commission reforms.

Islam further alleged that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is being used to target opposition leaders rather than addressing systemic corruption. He claimed the government is following the patterns of the previous regime by using state institutions for partisan interests.

During a concluding rally of an 11-party alliance long march in Rangpur, Islam also highlighted the government's failure to protect national interests, specifically citing the lack of progress on the Teesta mega-project negotiations with India. He noted that agricultural communities in the Rangpur region are suffering due to shortages of fertilizer, gas, and electricity. He warned that the neglect of citizens based on their political affiliations would be met with street protests.
