NAHT demands halt to graded Ofsted inspections over mental health fears
The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) has called for an immediate halt to graded Ofsted inspections, citing severe risks to the mental health and well-being of school leaders. The union argues that the current accountability framework, which replaced single-word judgments with detailed report cards nearly a year ago, has failed to reduce pressure and is instead causing acute distress among educators.
A survey of over 5,000 participants revealed that nearly 75% of school leaders believe the direction of the inspection process has worsened over the past year. NAHT General Secretary Paul Whiteman described the framework as a “real and present danger” to staff well-being, suggesting the high-stakes environment could even pose a risk to life.
The union has urged the government to replace the grading system with short narrative reports focusing on school strengths and areas for development. While a previous High Court bid for judicial review regarding the new system was rejected, the NAHT has shared documented cases of educator distress with Education Secretary Lucy Powell.
