Nail Care Tips for Preventing Damage and Improving Manicures

Maintaining healthy nails involves both preventative care and proper application techniques. To avoid common manicure mistakes, such as painting over the edges of the nail, applying a layer of Vaseline around the nail bed before starting can act as a barrier to make corrections easier.

Regarding nail strength, brittle nails are often caused by environmental factors rather than nutritional deficiencies. Frequent exposure to water and cleaning agents can damage the keratin structure. While many turn to biotin or mineral supplements like iron, zinc, and selenium, these do not automatically strengthen nails unless a medical deficiency is present. Because nails grow slowly—averaging only three millimeters per month—visible improvements from changing routines or using protective coatings may take several weeks to appear.
