Nail fungus affects 10% of global population

Onychomycosis, a chronic inflammatory infection of the nail unit, affects more than 10% of the global population. Primarily caused by dermatophytes such as Trichophyton rubrum and various yeasts, the infection enters the nail through micro-trauma or high moisture levels, leading to discoloration, thickening, and nail detachment.

Medical experts warn of the ‘hidden nail syndrome,’ where patients use nail polish, gels, or acrylics to camouflage the infection. This practice can create a greenhouse effect by trapping moisture, which exacerbates the fungal growth and weakens the nail's natural defenses. Dermatologist Dr. Christos Stamou notes that the social stigma associated with the condition leads over 50% of sufferers to hide their feet, often delaying professional medical treatment in favor of ineffective internet trends.

While traditional topical treatments often struggle to penetrate the hard keratin shield of the nail, new therapeutic advancements are emerging. These include next-generation targeted antifungal solutions, nanoparticles, and laser treatments designed to overcome the protective barrier of the nail plate.
