NAIMOS soldiers allegedly shoot man dead in Ghana's Eastern Region

A 28-year-old man, identified as Douglas Acheampong, has died following an alleged shooting by personnel from the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in Akyem Hemang, Eastern Region.

The incident reportedly began during a confrontation involving an immigration officer, Kwaku Kwebia, who was in civilian clothes. NAIMOS personnel allegedly suspected Kwebia of being an informant for illegal miners and demanded his mobile phone. When Kwebia refused to surrender the device, the situation escalated, and personnel reportedly attempted to force him into a vehicle.

As residents gathered to witness the commotion, NAIMOS personnel allegedly fired warning shots to disperse the crowd. Eyewitnesses claim that Acheampong was shot in the back at close range while attempting to flee the scene. He was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Investigations are expected to determine the exact circumstances of the encounter and whether the use of force by the security personnel complied with established procedures.
