Nairobi building collapse in Eastleigh leaves several missing

A multi-storey building under construction collapsed in the densely populated Eastleigh district of Nairobi on Friday, October 23, 2026. The structure, reported to be between 10 and 18 storeys high, fell around 1:00 PM to 1:40 PM local time, sending massive clouds of dust through the commercial area.

Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen reported that 67 construction workers were on-site; 66 escaped without serious injury, while one was injured. However, several people remain missing. While official reports initially cited seven missing persons, other sources, including the Kenya Red Cross, noted higher numbers of unaccounted individuals. At least two people were rescued alive from the rubble on Saturday and taken to the hospital.

The building’s ground floor and basement were occupied by 11 shops, including an electronics store, a butchery, and a grocery store, despite the building still being under construction. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja stated that while the building had construction approval, it lacked a necessary occupation certificate.

Rescue operations involving the Kenya Red Cross, Nairobi services, and national agencies have faced challenges due to the site being surrounded by other high-rise structures and a lack of heavy machinery in the early stages. Police used tear gas to disperse crowds and prevent looting at the scene.
