Nairobi building collapse injures four during nighttime demolition

A building collapse during a nighttime demolition on Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s Central Business District has left at least four people injured. The structure, which formerly housed Club Avenida, came down around 2 am while workers were dismantling it to make way for new development.

Emergency responders and police arrived at the scene to conduct rescue operations. While authorities have accounted for approximately 25 individuals who were inside the building, one person was reported to be in critical condition, and search efforts continued to ensure no one remained trapped under the debris.

Nairobi County official Geoffrey Mosiria has called for a thorough investigation by county engineers. The probe aims to determine the cause of the collapse, verify if qualified professionals supervised the work, and confirm whether all necessary demolition approvals were obtained. Preliminary observations suggest that the cutting of supporting metal beams on a less stable side of the building may have triggered the failure.
