Nairobi Flyways Declaration signed to protect migratory birds

At the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi, governments, scientists, and financial institutions signed the Nairobi Flyways Declaration. This agreement commits stakeholders to coordinated action to protect migratory birds and their habitats across international borders.

The summit coincided with the release of BirdLife International’s State of the World’s Birds report, which reveals that 45 per cent of migratory bird species are in decline, with one in nine species threatened with extinction. The report notes that species dependent on marine habitats, forests, and coastal wetlands are particularly vulnerable.

In response to these findings, more than $6 billion in conservation financing has been mobilized by three multilateral development banks through initiatives launched since 2021. The declaration aims to address human-caused factors such as invasive species and agricultural intensification to support bird populations across their breeding, stopover, and non-breeding grounds.
