Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja drives infrastructure upgrades and tree protection

Five months after President William Ruto and Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja signed an Sh80 billion cooperation pact, large‑scale works are reshaping Nairobi. Projects along Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way include expanded drainage, concrete‑lined storm‑water systems and modern walkways, aimed at improving mobility, reducing flooding and presenting the city as a modern global gateway.

Separately, Governor Sakaja warned the Kenya National Highways Authority, Kenya Urban Roads Authority, Kenya Power and other agencies that trees cannot be felled without written permission from the County Director of Environment. He announced a meeting to enforce the rule and protect mature trees along major roads, emphasizing that any infrastructure work must first obtain county approval.

Both initiatives seek to balance rapid urban development with environmental stewardship in Kenya’s capital.
