Nairobi Governor Sakaja issues new urban and environmental directives

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has introduced new directives aimed at urban management and environmental preservation. He has called upon street photographers to act as city ambassadors by documenting Nairobi’s landmarks and daily activities to promote the capital. Additionally, Sakaja encouraged photographers to report regulatory breaches, such as illegal dumping, vandalism, and improper conduct by public transport operators, through official channels.

On environmental issues, Sakaja criticized agencies including Kenya Power and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) for felling trees on State House Road without sufficient justification. He emphasized that cutting trees requires formal county approval and warned that developers must maintain green spaces within their projects.

Addressing infrastructure and resources, the Governor noted that Nairobi faces a daily water deficit of 444.4 million liters. Proposed interventions include utilizing the Northern Collector Tunnel and implementing a treatment recovery system. He also confirmed plans to dredge the city's main rivers in preparation for El Niño, in coordination with the Red Cross and road authorities.
