Nairobi Hospital board member Dr. Job Obwaka dies, autopsy cites cardiac arrest amid poisoning probe
Renowned obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Job Obwaka, a senior board member of Nairobi Hospital, died on May 1, 2026 after collapsing at the home of 45‑year‑old Beatrice Wangari in Kitengela. He was rushed to Nairobi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. An autopsy at Lee Funeral Home confirmed cardiac arrest as the immediate cause of death, linked to a pre‑existing heart condition.
Police are investigating a possible poisoning. Samples collected from Wangari’s Milimani residence – including utensils, medication, and partially consumed wine – have been sent to the Government Chemist for toxicological analysis. Wangari, described by prosecutors as the woman who was with Obwaka at the time of his collapse, remains in custody for ten days while investigations continue. His wife had previously posted a video celebrating his release from custody a month earlier following an arrest over hospital leadership disputes.
The case has attracted significant public attention, prompting a court affidavit that seeks extended detention for Wangari and further forensic testing pending final toxicology results.
