Nairobi police arrest four suspects for extorting Chinese traders
Nairobi police have arrested four suspects following reports of harassment and extortion targeting Chinese businessmen in the Nyamakima area.
According to Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud, a group of approximately 30 individuals, claiming to represent the Nyamakima business community, allegedly entered businesses operated by Chinese nationals to demand business and immigration documents. The group reportedly demanded payments of up to Ksh300,000 in exchange for allowing the traders to continue their operations.
Police have recorded complaints from four Chinese traders. Two of the complainants reported having already made payments under duress, with one paying Ksh300,000 and another paying Ksh200,000. Mohamud warned the public against targeting foreigners based on nationality or attempting to enforce government regulations without a legal mandate.
