Nairobi opposition rally draws thousands despite CBD ban
Tens of thousands of supporters of the Linda Mwananchi opposition coalition gathered in Nairobi on Sunday for a major mobilization rally. The event, which featured prominent figures including Edwin Sifuna, James Orengo, and Babu Owino, served as a significant display of political strength ahead of the 2027 presidential elections.
Ahead of the gathering, Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamud issued a directive banning large political rallies within the Central Business District (CBD). Authorities cited intelligence regarding potential disruptions to public order and the need to protect the city's commercial operations, workers, and tourists. While the CBD was restricted, the procession moved through various parts of the capital, eventually heading toward Jacaranda Grounds.
Despite a heavy police presence and previous instances of political violence in the country, the rally remained largely calm and festive. Senator Edwin Sifuna, a rising challenger to President William Ruto, addressed crowds, tapping into public sentiment regarding corruption and the cost of living. The mobilization marks a key moment for the opposition coalition as they build momentum for the upcoming electoral cycle.
