Nairobi Revenue Authority Cracks Down on Unpaid Land Rates

The Nairobi County Government, through the Nairobi Revenue Authority (NRA), announced a countywide crackdown on property owners who have not paid land rates for more than three years. Six debt‑recovery firms have been appointed to pursue the arrears, which total about Ksh 50 billion across the city, with penalties and interest added.

The notice warns that failure to settle the debt will trigger enforcement actions such as property attachment, auction, and Credit Reference Bureau listing, without further notice. Governor Johnson Sakaja’s administration is targeting the recovery to meet its own‑source revenue goal of Ksh 21 billion for the 2026/27 fiscal year, building on a record Ksh 15.4 billion collected in 2025/26.

Payments must be made exclusively to authorized Nairobi City County Revenue Accounts, and the NRA indicated that the enforcement measures are authorized under the National Rating Act 2024.
