Nairobi undergoes urban renewal amid reports of poor road conditions
Nairobi is undergoing a major infrastructure overhaul through the Nairobi County Urban Renewal and Regeneration Programme, a joint initiative between the National and County Governments. Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that the project aims to modernize the capital by improving roads, pedestrian walkways, and public amenities to ensure the city remains safe and functional.
A key component of the initiative is the Smart Street Lighting Project, which involves installing over 40,000 automated LED fixtures capable of real-time fault reporting. The programme also targets drainage improvements to mitigate historical flooding issues in various wards and junctions.
However, the city faces ongoing challenges with road conditions. Motorists have reported significant frustration regarding massive potholes and poor road maintenance within the Central Business District (CBD) and residential areas like Kilimani and Kileleshwa. Some drivers noted that certain repair works appeared to have been halted, leading to concerns over vehicle damage and inadequate drainage.
