Nairobi's Dishi na County school feeding programme expands

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has introduced a new chapati-making machine to the Dishi na County school feeding programme. Installed at the Toi Primary School kitchen, the machine is capable of producing up to 2,000 chapatis per hour, which will be distributed to schools across Nairobi on a coordinated schedule.

The Dishi na County initiative currently serves more than 324,000 learners in public primary and Early Childhood Development (ECDE) schools. The programme has served over 85 million meals to date, with the county aiming to reach a milestone of 100 million meals.

In response to the programme's expansion, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, a potential challenger for the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial seat, addressed claims that he would abolish the initiative if elected. Owino stated that the programme will remain in place under his leadership and insisted that no parents would be required to pay for their children to benefit from the meals.
