Najib Razak granted conditional pardon and house arrest by Malaysia's King
Malaysia’s King, Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar, has granted a conditional pardon to former Prime Minister Najib Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his prison sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028. The decision was reached during a meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories.
The pardon is contingent upon Najib paying a 50 million ringgit fine and adhering to specific conditions. Failure to comply with these terms will result in the immediate revocation of the pardon and a return to prison.
While the pardon addresses his sentence related to the SRC International corruption case, Najib continues to face other legal proceedings, including appeals regarding his convictions in the 1MDB scandal.
Political and civil society reactions have been mixed. Government officials emphasized that the pardon is a constitutional prerogative of the King. However, organizations such as Transparency International Malaysia and Bersih expressed concerns regarding public perception, potential impacts on anti-corruption efforts, and the message such exceptional treatment sends to the public.
