Najib Razak solidarity fund raises RM1 million amid mixed reactions

A nationwide donation drive launched by UMNO to help former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak pay a RM50 million fine has collected over RM1 million. The funds are a prerequisite for Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, following a conditional pardon from the Agong.

While supporters and old acquaintances are expected to contribute, the fundraising effort has faced significant backlash. Critics have utilized the bank transfer message feature to send symbolic donations of one or five sen accompanied by insulting messages. One common phrase used by detractors in the transfer notes was ‘bapak sakau negara’, a crude term directed at the former leader.

Legal representatives for Najib are also exploring the possibility of releasing certain assets to meet the financial requirement. Najib’s daughter, Nooryana Najwa, stated that her father is touched by the response and emphasized that all contributions are strictly voluntary.
