Ünal Üstel defends Turkish Cypriot identity and religious freedom

Prime Minister Ünal Üstel addressed the importance of preserving the language, culture, and religious identity of the Turkish Cypriot people. Speaking at a panel titled ‘Religious Life and Religious Services in Cyprus’ during Mosques and Religious Officials Week, Üstel emphasized that the Turkish Cypriot community has historically struggled to maintain its identity, particularly during the British administration period.

Üstel stated that the state has a responsibility to protect freedom of belief and must remain neutral toward all faiths. He asserted that the community's presence on the island is anchored by the core values of homeland, nation, and religion, which have served to unite the people through difficult historical periods. He also noted that religious values should not be exploited for personal or political gain.
