Ünal Üstel pledges to locate missing persons from Cyprus conflict
Prime Minister Ünal Üstel has reaffirmed the government's commitment to locating missing persons from the period of the Cyprus struggle, spanning from the 1950s to the 1974 Peace Operation.
During a meeting with Gürsel Benan, President of the Association of Martyrs' Families and Disabled Veterans, Üstel stated that uncovering the fate of the missing is a ‘historical responsibility’ of the state. He emphasized that resolving these uncertainties is essential not only for historical clarity but also to alleviate the long-standing suffering of the families involved.
The Prime Minister expressed readiness to support investigative efforts in both Northern and Southern Cyprus. He specifically highlighted the importance of ongoing work to identify the remains of martyrs found in a mass grave in the village of Mandirga, located in the Paphos region.
