Naloxone distribution linked to declining overdose deaths in Alabama and Connecticut

States in the U.S. are reporting declines in overdose deaths linked to increased access to naloxone, an opioid-reversal medication.

In Alabama, provisional federal data indicates that substance-related overdose deaths dropped by 46% between March 2024 and March 2026. The Alabama Department of Mental Health noted that while fentanyl and synthetic opioids remain significant risks, the distribution of over 222,000 naloxone kits since 2019 has supported progress in saving lives.

Similarly, Connecticut has seen a reduction in unintentional overdose deaths, falling from 1,524 in 2021 to 982 in 2024. Officials attribute this trend to wide distribution efforts of naloxone, often known by the brand name Narcan. Local harm reduction programs in Connecticut continue to provide the nasal spray for free to assist in preventing fatalities during overdoses.
