Naïma Moutchou addresses cost of living and security in French overseas territories
French Overseas Minister Naïma Moutchou is addressing critical issues regarding the cost of living and rising insecurity in French overseas territories, including Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Réunion. During a Senate session on October 21, 2026, Moutchou reaffirmed that the cost of living remains a central demand for these regions. A bill aimed at combating high prices, which was adopted by the Senate nearly a year ago, is still awaiting examination by the National Assembly.
In addition to economic concerns, Senator Frédéric Buval highlighted a severe security crisis in the territories. He reported instances of looting, arson, and violence, noting that Martinique has surpassed 40 homicides annually due to drug trafficking and firearm proliferation. Buval noted that while these territories represent 4% of the French population, they account for a disproportionate amount of violent crime and assaults on law enforcement.
Moutchou has promised “complete responses” to these challenges, citing a 14-million-euro emergency plan announced in July to bolster security and combat narcotics trafficking.
