Sri Lanka President announces closure of 34 state institutions

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has announced that the Ministry of Finance has decided to close 34 state institutions. Speaking at an annual general meeting of the Government Surveyor Department in Battaramulla, the President noted that while the country possesses sufficient funds to face economic shocks, the economy is not yet strong enough to withstand significant external pressures.

To address these challenges, the government intends to integrate certain state institutions to create a more efficient administrative machine. The President highlighted that the current state service struggles to retain professionals, leading many to leave the sector.

Regarding civil service compensation, the President stated that while basic salaries have been increased, the 2027 budget will focus heavily on managing the 110 billion rupee requirement for further increases. He noted that while basic salary hikes may not occur in 2028, the government will prioritize essential payments to retain employees in the professional state service.
