Namba Parks Museum to host immersive Japanese hell art exhibition

The immersive exhibition ‘Jigoku ni Ochiru Ten’ (Falling into Hell) is scheduled to be held at the Namba Parks Museum in Osaka from November 28 to December 27. The event explores Japanese concepts of the afterlife and hell through a combination of classical art and modern technology.

Supervised by Masahiko Tamura, an expert in medieval literature and Japanese hell culture, the exhibition guides visitors through a journey starting from death, including the ‘Kusozu’ (nine stages of a decaying corpse), the ‘Chuyu’ (the state between death and rebirth), the ‘Tenno Saiban’ (the judgment of the ten kings), and the ‘Eight Great Hells.’

Key highlights include the use of high-definition digital archive technology by TOPPAN to present life-sized, high-resolution reproductions of important cultural properties, such as the National Treasure ‘Jigoku Soshi’ and the Important Cultural Property ‘Rokudo-e.’ Additionally, the creative studio KOO-KI will provide spatial production and animation, featuring moving depictions of demons and souls on giant screens to create an immersive experience.
