Namdalen businesses take lead of Blue Conference to address labor shortages

Local businesses in the Namdalen region of Norway are taking over the organization of the Blue Conference to address critical recruitment needs in the coastal and aquaculture industries. Namdalskysten Næringsforening and InnovArena will serve as the primary owners and organizers for the 2026 conference, marking a shift from previous management by educational institutions.

Local companies anticipate a need to hire up to 1,100 new employees over the next five years, with a particular shortage of mechanics, welders, and seafarers. To ensure students and trainees are not overlooked, schools such as Val and Ytre Namdal high schools will remain on the organizing committee to host dedicated sessions connecting youth and adult learners directly with industry leaders.

Recent discussions at the Kompetanseforum Namdalen highlighted the necessity of flexible education models and practical workplace learning to combat a shrinking working-age population. Industry representatives emphasized the importance of developing internal talent and utilizing new technologies, such as real-time data and machine learning for fish health monitoring, to meet evolving maritime and aquaculture demands.
