Namecheap services disrupted by DDoS attack and cooling failure

Namecheap, a major web-hosting provider and domain registrar, experienced a significant service outage that lasted approximately 15 hours. The disruption affected various services, including EasyWP hosting, DNS, email clients, and the company’s own website and support helpdesk.

Reports indicate the outage was caused by a combination of factors. One report cited a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack and a power outage, while another specified a failure of cooling systems at a data center in Phoenix. The cooling issue reportedly involved two of the four chillers at the facility failing.

Services began to recover in stages, with core databases returning online in the late afternoon EDT, followed by the main website and live chat services. Full service was restored by 3:50 am EDT. Namecheap CEO Hillan Klein provided updates via social media, and the company has committed to conducting a thorough post-mortem to investigate the failure of existing safeguards.
