Namibia advances agricultural strategies and food security partnerships

Namibian Agriculture Minister Inge Zaamwani is advancing initiatives to bolster the nation's agricultural sector through strategic roadmaps and public-private partnerships.

Meatco is implementing a strategic roadmap for the Northern Communal Areas (NCA) to enhance market access for communal livestock producers. The plan focuses on revitalizing abattoirs in Oshakati, Rundu, Outapi, and Eenhana to better integrate livestock into formal domestic and export markets. With approximately one million cattle in the NCA, the strategy aims to optimize processing capacity and livestock procurement.

Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform is engaging with the Namib Foods Group—comprising Namib Mills, Namib Poultry, and FeedMaster—to explore partnerships aimed at boosting local food production and distribution. These efforts align with presidential directives to increase agricultural land availability. As part of these production efforts, the ministry has allocated N$3.32 million to develop a new green scheme at Ekoka village in the Ohangwena region.
