Namibia advances nuclear energy plans and agricultural manufacturing proposals

Namibia is advancing strategic initiatives to bolster its energy and agricultural sectors. Prime Minister Elijah Ngurare has appointed John Titus as the nation’s Nuclear Commissioner. Titus will lead the technical programme and Secretariat of the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO) to evaluate the feasibility of integrating nuclear power into the national energy mix.

To oversee this transition, the government established the NEPIO Management Committee, which includes representatives from five government institutions. This committee will coordinate preparations in accordance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines, focusing on nuclear safety, security, radioactive waste management, and environmental protection.

In a separate effort to address food security and economic competitiveness, Prime Minister Ngurare has proposed the establishment of a local fertiliser and chemical manufacturing plant. The initiative aims to reduce high agricultural production costs that currently make locally produced maize significantly more expensive than imports from South Africa. Additionally, the Prime Minister proposed creating a domestic food quality assurance and testing facility to decrease reliance on neighboring countries for food safety verification.
