Namibia faces multi-billion dollar challenges in green industry and illicit finance
Namibia is navigating significant economic shifts involving both massive investment requirements and substantial financial losses. The country requires over US$20 billion in capital to develop a pipeline of green industrialisation projects. These initiatives include green hydrogen, ammonia, fertiliser production, mineral processing, and clean technology manufacturing. Joseph Mukendwa, Acting Head of the Namibia Green Hydrogen Programme, stated that several projects are being prepared for potential final investment decisions within the next 24 months.
Simultaneously, the nation is grappling with significant financial leakage. A national assessment by the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) estimated that Namibia recorded approximately N$67.8 billion in potential illicit financial flows over a three-year period, averaging N$22.6 billion annually. Minister of Finance Ericah Shafudah noted that these suspected activities, which include tax evasion and money laundering, threaten to deprive the country of resources essential for public services, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
