Namibia imposes nationwide livestock restrictions after FMD outbreak
Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) has been detected in Namibia’s previously FMD-free zone, specifically within the Karasburg State Veterinary District in the //Kharas Region. The outbreak was identified on 22 September 2026 during routine surveillance, with ten out of eleven cattle samples testing positive for the virus.
In response, the Directorate of Veterinary Services has implemented nationwide restrictions, including the suspension of the movement, marketing, trade, import, export, and transit of all cloven-hoofed animals and their products. The slaughter of these animals has been halted at local and export abattoirs, informal markets, and social events. Roadblocks are being established to enforce these controls.
The outbreak has already begun to impact the economy and food supply. Retailers in areas such as Walvis Bay and Swakopmund have reported depleted red meat stocks as consumers rush to purchase supplies. Economic experts suggest the restrictions could cause logistical disruptions and potentially impact meat prices, depending on the duration of the containment efforts.
Bank Windhoek has reaffirmed its N$2 million commitment to the national FMD Support Fund to assist the agricultural sector and protect national food security during this period.
